I want so many of his babies.

That's a lie. I don't want any of his babies. Because babies would take away the time I would spend doing things people shouldn't even think about with him and baking cakes in the kitchen he made me.

Ayn Rand Ramble.

If you haven't read Atlas Shrugged this might not make sense. It might not anyways.

Watching Mad Men today and had an epiphany. I had noticed that they mentioned Ayn Rand a few times in the show but the last episode I watched I realized that the show (so far) plays like a Rand story. Draper is very clearly Rearden but with a family that loves him rather than a family who despises and drains him. Pete Campbell falls nicely into the roll of Peter Keating (however, his dynamic with Don has a very strong element of the James Taggart/Francisco D'Anconia relationship). Mad Men takes these characters and gives them a base in reality. In fact, I just googled this connection and came up with this blog entry-which basically says the same thing I just did and adds in that Rachel, who runs her father's department store (and whom Don seems to feel most comfortable with-of his many mistresses that is) is Dagny. That was an obvious one that I missed*. The wonderful and difficult part of reading Rand is that everything is always black and white to her- something I just can't subscribe to completely. To see a Rearden-like character but in a situation that isn't so clear- is just incredibly interesting to watch.
Funny coincidence is that I always imagined John Slattery, who plays Roger Sterling, as Hank Rearden (that's him at the top there). He's been my pick since I first read the book and he was playing the principal on Ed.
I'm only on the beginning of season two but I just love watching it even more now that I've noticed the elements of Rand. All of their smoking reminds me of a line from Atlas Shrugged about a man thinking and holding fire in his fingertips. It's so stinkin interesting to watch it through the lens of Ayn Rand- more than it already was. I'm just twitterpated with it. I really am. And it's even better because although Rand never specified a time period for Atlas Shrugged (she did date it in many ways by making the focus trains and steel) this is exactly what I imagined. Late fifties. It's beautiful.
They've been trying to make a movie forever. There are lots of legal issues but filming has started. For a long time Angelina Jolie was attached to the film as the heroine, Dagny Taggart. Then it was Gwenyth Paltrow. Brad Pitt was going to play John Galt, the hero. However, the project has fallen apart several times and these folks are no longer involved. Now, it's all no-names. I don't like their picks AT ALL. However, I don't have very high expectations as I can't imagine someone being able to put a story like that on screen and do it properly. If that seems contradictory to what I just said about Mad Men- I mean that it would be nearly impossible to really keep the entire essence of Atlas and still make it watchable in a feature film format. I suppose they're doing it in parts-sort of an indie film miniseries- but I'm still skeptical. What Mad Men does- use elements of the philosophy and character profiles to tell a different story- is much more doable (plus they do it well-oh so well).

So the moral of the story is- yay for making connections that should have been really obvious (made clear to me by the number of hits when I googled 'ayn rand and mad men' )

*oh, oh! And also Peggy has a definite Cheryl complex over Pete (which puts Pete in a James Taggart role, he could do either slime ball I think) but so far it looks like she is going to move past it and hopefully have a happier ending than Cheryl.

Christ almighty

watching mad men makes me want to smoke a cigarette. It's sexy as hell on that show and I'm just saying...if it didn't cause cancer and make your mouth taste terrible I'd fully be chain smoking all the time.

Before I die...

I'm going the Martha Stewart the SHIT out of each of the following holidays at least once:
Christmas
Halloween
Valentine's day
Mother's Day
Father's Day
4th of July
New Years Eve
Inauguration Day
EasterThanksgiving
A Child's Birthday Party

Now, by Martha Stewart the SHIT out of a holiday, I mean that I will have at least 10 people in my home. I will hand make gifts/favors. I will have amazing centerpieces. I will cook all the food myself. I will create home decor specifically for this event. There will be place cards. I will decorate my yard specifically for this event. I will send elaborate invitations. I will create special cocktails for the event. I will do my own floral arrangements. I will also be put together and well groomed at said event.

Before I'm dead or forced into a nursing home by my ungrateful children...

So instead of posting all of my things at once I'll just post them one at a time. Above is the list I made while walking home the other day. Walking while writing while it's raining is not conducive to legible handwriting. And my chicken scratch is barely human in the first place.

If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones

Archeology is so freaking cool. Seriously. Gladiator grave yard.
I should have studied archeology. I bet I would have been like Indiana Jones.

Should I be going to a staff meeting on Thursday?

Disclaimer- If you weren't an RA, you won't give a shit about this. I'm almost positive.

I'm helping to organize a Wellness Month at work and I just made a poster with everyone's goals on it. I had limited marker colors and sub-par paper but I made it work. I wanted to head over to the Pro and get some good old fashioned bright yellow butcher paper. I wanted to paint my poster. I wanted to use di-cuts. And I REALLY wanted blue tape.
I had planned an in-office Yoga class during lunch but the instructor didn't show up and also none of my residents...er, coworkers, remembered their workout clothes. Next week is massage and of course they'll all show for that one. Massages and pizza are guaranteed program...er, work event, draws.
I was just talking to Tracy about getting prizes for people doing well on their goals and I thought to myself 'can you buy itunes gift cards with PO's?'
I've been sending out informational emails about various aspects of wellness and dammit, these would make such good bulletin boards.

Dear Pro, I miss you. It took me 3 years to admit it but...it's true. And you always knew it. Programming, I sorta miss you too. I mean, I don't really ever want to see you again but we had some really good times didn't we? Staff meetings, I only miss hating you with Owen, Carolyn, and Jason. Sark Poster in Mel's office- I don't fucking miss you. at all. Common Grounds, Hammy's and Fire and Spice- I miss the shit out of you. Huge ring of keys- okay I miss you too.

Pondering life while walking down Burnside.

There's something really lovely about ferris wheels. I like them when they're all lit up. I was walking home from work yesterday and enjoying the view of the waterfront with the Rose Festival Carnival all set up. It makes the city look carefree and whimsical-especially because from the bridge you can't see that the whole carnival is a big mud puddle.
Anyway, I realized that I'd never been kissed on a ferris wheel which is, I think, something that every girl should experience at least once. So then I started making a bucket list of sorts on my walk home. It was raining so it's very smeary and hard to read but I'll get it on here next week. I'm off to Eugene for some A Capella magic and best friend lovin and don't have time to decipher my already terrible, and now blurred, handwriting.
But for now, here's one from my list:

Kiss someone on a ferris wheel.

Go! Fight! Win!

Having an incredibly hard time focusing at work today. My current project is coordinating and gathering information for the Wellness Month we're starting next week. However, instead of being productive I've mostly been looking up vegan crock pot recipes and ways to use Kale and Collard Greens. I'm fantasizing about going grocery shopping. Probably won't happen for two weeks but when it does I will be prepared.
I have once again said goodbye to dairy. I fell off the wagon when I worked for Steve and ridiculous stress levels plus hotel food just didn't equal me being able to stay away from cheese- especially out on the ranch in Nevada where I got a real life stink-eye for ordering my salad without steak. 'Hold the cheese' probably would have earned me a boot in the ass. Anyway, goodbye cheese. Goodbye cottage cheese. Goodbye eggs. Hello veggies and no stomach aches and lots of energy.
Speaking of energy, I'm also trying to commit myself to a more active lifestyle. My energy level has been low lately and I'm pretty sure lack of exercise and shitty diet are to blame. I think I mentioned before that I was starting the Couch to 5K program (C25K) which is a 2 month program that trains inexperienced runners for a 5K. I have started this program at least 3 times. This time I'm really trying to stick with it. Right now, I'm on track to run the "Skirt Chaser" on August 7th. I've promised myself to register in July (when I will have the registration fee). This Friday will be the end of week one. I'm also doing things like walking home from work instead of riding the bus and I want to start walking Joey to the dog park a couple days a week.
Another goal is to be able to do the splits by the time I finish C25K. Stretching is by far my favorite part of exercising and if I'm consistantly stretching after my workouts I think I can at least get splits on my right side which is actually something I could never do when I was cheering. Maybe I'll work on my toe touch too. Although I don't know that the folks living below me would be too pleased about that.
